Virtue

“Virtue is excellence, something uncommonly great and beautiful, which rises far above what is vulgar and ordinary.” — Adam Smith

Think about the rarity of virtue these days. It is so rare that when confronted by it, we ourselves are perplexed, yet immeasurably refreshed by its existence.

We live in a time where virtue has been cheapened to mere morality – morality is not virtue. Virtue cannot be attained by acts of human efforts, though it often gets placed into this category. A person with virtue is one who displays a deep authenticity in the way they handle others and anything (good or bad) that comes their way with grace, wisdom, steadfastness, and love. It cannot be mimicked and I love that.

As followers of Christ we are called to a life of virtue. A life that is so perplexing and refreshing that it breathes new hope and life into this dying and unsettled world.

It always blows my mind how relevant the word of God was, is, and always will be. Check out Psalms 14-16 below:

“The Lord looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one” (Psalm 14: 2-3, NIV).

The Lord is constantly searching the earth for those who are seeking him – those who contain His virtuous Spirit. And sadly, we humans have disappointed. But Psalm 15 and 16 goes on to explain about those who He sees and is pleased by. What a joy it would be to bring pleasure to the Creator!!!

“Those whose walk is blameless , who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from their heart…who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind…whoever does these things will never be shaken” (Psalm 15: 2, 4b, 5b, NIV).

“I say to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing‘” (Psalm 16:2, NIV).

If you skipped over that last sentence, you missed the whole point of this post.

Apart from God we have no good thing. Can you say that with full conviction? That without God there is nothing that we can do that will ever be good enough? I’ll speak for myself when I say I’m tired of striving. I’m tired of trying to please people who never seem please-able. Our world is dehydrated and we need to quench it with authenticity, we need more virtue. Allow the I AM to exhale into us His spirit of strength, fervor, and virtue that He should be well pleased.
